Full Episode: Bold, Eye-Catching Design in New Orleans and New York City | Open House TV

Full Episode: Bold, Eye-Catching Design in New Orleans and New York City | Open House TV

Open House host Sara Gore takes us on a tour of several reimagined homes from NOLA in Louisiana to Nolita in New York City, and introduces this week’s episode from within a dramatic, 4-bedroom duplex penthouse located in a cast-iron building in Tribeca that features over 5,000 sq. ft. of luxury living and is designed for open-air enjoyment day and night.

We kick off the festivities with a trip to New Orleans to visit the bold, colorful, and vibrant home of production designer Hannah Beachler (and her adorable pup Miss Maxine, a.k.a. “the queen of the castle”), who won the 2019 Oscar for Best Production Design for “Black Panther” and has worked on a variety of acclaimed films, including “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed.” This 103-year-old Creole cottage built in 1920 is painted black on the outside (hence the nickname Black Daydream), and inside features a cinematic design aesthetic that pays homage to the gracious splendor of the Big Easy and captures a sense of modernity in something old (as displayed by the black fireplace in her bedroom and the steam punk-inspired kitchen, which includes a bird mural, cypress-wood shelves, and Industrial Age iron-and-glass cabinet guard doors on a rail). From the entry hallway that serves as a visual progression of her career and life to the elegant yet whimsical enclave that’s separated by a credenza (traditionally, Creole cottages did not have dining rooms) that’s perfect for entertaining guests, Hannah’s home features an overall design that focuses on texture (e.g. a South African beaded chandelier that juxtaposes the Victorian state of the chairs in the dining area), color-blocking full of saturated hues, and Afrofuturism art (including a nature motif and African masks from the movie “Miles Ahead”) that not only tells a story, but retells how ancestral history is told.

After that, we journey over to midtown to explore the New York City home of Leesa Rowland — cult film star, animal activist, and author of “The Charisma Factor: Unlock the Secrets of Magnetic Charm and Personal Influence in Your Life.” Leesa wanted her living space to be a reflection of her vivacious personality and the things she loves, which begins with an entranceway that makes an impression and features custom gold doors and black & white marble floors. From the bright entertaining area that’s a toast to Hollywood glam (and features a bar, lounge area with swivel chairs, a stone fireplace that serves as the focal point, and needlework pillows made by her mother) to the dining room that includes a prominent chandelier, an Armani table, gorgeous velvet Jonathan Adler chairs, and antique mirrors that add depth, to a walk-in closet complete with beautiful couture, vanity table, and views for days, this apartment is as comfortable as it is fabulous.

We then swing by 551 West 21st Street in West Chelsea for a tour of apartment 14A led by Calli Sarkesh. Conceived and designed by architecture firm Foster & Partners, this 4-bedroom, 4.5-bath apartment is filled with natural light and is elegant yet functional. It features 4271 sq. ft. of fine living space that fuses a classic aesthetic with a modern one and includes custom millwork, a contemporary layout, herringbone oak floors, an elegant gallery; a 70-ft long great room that serves as the centerpiece of the place with an intimate library at the end; an exquisite kitchen designed for social gatherings with integrated oak cabinetry & cozy breakfast nook; a powder room; a primary suite that serves as a relaxing, pin-drop-quiet sanctuary with a wood-panel walk-in closet and private spa area; and best of all: perimeter seating throughout with stunning views of the Statue of Liberty.

Last but certainly not least, we drop by by interior designer Melanie Morris’s pied-à-terre in Nolita, which she shares with her husband and three teenage sons. This open-concept, functional home features earthy tones, furniture from the Kenmare collection (including an oatmeal-hued sofa, a dark stone coffee table, and a credenza with ambrosia maple tones and dark fluted wood that was designed specifically for the apartment), and a playful sense of design as best captured by the ceramic overhead light fixture in the dining room and the calming pop of color in the master suite (which includes ombre-glazed walls, a vintage light fixture from the 1960s, views of the World Trade Center, and soft, curved pieces with brass accents). Every space not only feels unique through unexpected touches & careful delineation (as evidenced by the rug from her Pop Collection that separates the living room into its own entity), but also allows its residents to remain connected to each other throughout the day.

Step Inside Soman Chainani's Upper West Side Apartment | Open House TV

“Light is a predominant theme that guides everything I do with my writing process.” Soman Chainani, author of fantasy for young adults, including “The School of Good and Evil” bestselling series, shows us around his delightful Upper West Side abode, in which he resides in with his adorable French bulldog Douggie. During this enlightening segment, he walks us through each step of his writing process at home (to keep his mind clear, he avoids clutter and keeps his space organized) and invites viewers to take a closer look at his creative station (he does not write at a desk since it feels too formal and not as comfortable as his special writing chair); cozy zone consisting of soft blankets that are great for decompressing (“an antidote to the hardness of New York City outside”); curated bookshelves full of engrossing reads; and unique trinkets he’s picked up from fan, movie sets, and his travels around the world.

Full Episode: Sophistication Meets Creativity in Five Exquisite Homes | Open House TV

Full Episode: Sophistication Meets Creativity in Five Exquisite Homes | Open House TV

Open House host Sara Gore kicks off this week’s episode in a bright & airy triplex penthouse (610 Park Ave, PH16E) on the Upper East Side. From the gallery-esque foyer to the well-defined living and dining areas with custom millwork and marble wood-burning fireplace, this 6-bedroom 7643 sq.ft. home — complete with 6 baths and a half bath — epitomizes Park Avenue luxury, craftsmanship, sophistication.

Next up: we join interior designer Alexander Doherty in the West Village for a tour of his latest project, in which he took a modern white box given to him by the developer and transforming it into an elegant home full of warmth and personable touches. This duplex apartment features a staircase with accentuated curvatures that contrasts the overall grid-like layout, main entertainment space with strong saturated colors and ample seating areas, remodeled kitchen/dining area that fuses refined polished upgrades with modern amenities, and primary bedroom that plays up a moody gray, mauve, and lavender palette to evoke a feeling of serenity.

Right after, we travel to Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles to join film producer Heidi Jo Markel for a look around her gorgeous residence at 1884 Lauren Canyon Blvd. This 6-bedroom/5-bath 4,888 sq. ft. home is a completely custom, modern take on Hollywood glamour, as well as a celebration of indoor/outdoor living every step of the way with the juxtaposition between the natural environment and the city. From the homage to art decor and cantilevered lounging areas to the amazing open-floor plan that’s perfect for entertaining guests to the private screening room that serves as both a space for working and unwinding with a good movie, this home is as relaxing as it is stunning.

We then fly back to the East Coast to join Soman Chainani, author of the bestselling fantasy series ‘The School for Good and Evil’ — for a tour of his sunny Upper West Side abode, in which he resides in with his adorable French bulldog Douggie. During this enlightening segment, he walks us through each step of his writing process at home and invites viewers to take a closer look at his creative station, cozy zone consisting of soft blankets that are great for decompressing (“an antidote to the hardness of New York City outside”), ample bookshelves full of engrossing reads, and unique trinkets he’s picked up from fan, movie sets, and his travels around the world.

After, we visit the intimate Soho loft of 212 Box architectural designer Eric Clough, who has always been passionate about detailing and the way materials come together. From the use of vibrant and textured furniture fabrics in the living room to the dining room with its extraordinary marble table and custom millwork, to the corner reading nook and the modern communal kitchen with the large island ideal for gatherings, this comfortable and cohesive living space is full of unique and personable details and serves as a showcase for clients and beautiful home to entertain guests with beautiful dinners.

To round off this episode, we join artist Harlan Brandon at his lovely house in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn that combines classic architecture, including the original moldings and fireplace, with his one-of-a-kind artwork and stylish furnishings that include heirlooms and pieces from Ralph Lauren Home. This Gilded Age brownstone, built in 1910, fuses traditional fixtures and details with contemporary conveniences, starting with the etched glass windows in the foyer and the light structure that went being gas to electric. “That whole transition of time is something that we are very conscious of throughout the house: the element of time and the use of time,” Brandon explains. Every room in this home features a design that tells a story and offers the family the opportunity to relax, entertain, and create.

Full Episode: Design Meets Art in 5 Stunning Homes in NYC, LA, and Palm Springs | Open House TV

Join Open House host Sara Gore for a tour of several timeless yet contemporary homes. We kick off the episode from within 240 Park Ave S, PH17: a brand new 3900 sq. ft. penthouse in the Flatiron District that decked out with three bedrooms, Italian porcelain floors, high ceilings, a gas fireplace, a sleek kitchen, and an abundance of natural light.

We then venture over to The Astor, a historic building on the Upper West Side, to join Andrew Bowen, principle of Ash Staging for a look around 235 W 75th St, #402. This expansive 3200 sq. ft. pre-war residence features a lot of the bones of a NYC classic with a lot of modern upgrades, including the defining near-black corridor — with its white-oak floors that feature a herringbone pattern with inlay throughout and its classic architectural moldings — which serves as an artery throughout the home by creating a moody experience; adds drama and mystery when you open each door and are greeted by bright, well-lit rooms. From the contrasting colors and large sectional in the den to the ante room that features a circular console table and contemporary mirror — and the primary suite with its impressive bay window and seating nook to the main entertaining space that incorporates art that complements the curved furniture in a free-flowing layout — this home embodies balance, design, and functionality. As Bowen best describes it: “an oasis of modern luxury.”

Next: we fly over to the West Coast to join designer and stage Meridith Baer at 1772 N Crescent Heights Blvd. Los Angeles, just above the Sunset Strip. This 6-bedroom, 7-bath 9000 sq. ft. sumptuous home — complete with a primary bedroom that features a rooftop patio, wet bar, and fire pit — is evokes a cozy despite its modern, industrial, organic vibe. From the living room with its handwoven rugs, rounded furniture, and light fixtures stuck in the wall that add to the eclectic & unexpected nature of the space, to the gorgeous, contemporary kitchen and its playful touches, to the dining area with a free-floating chandelier, live-edge wood, and floor-to-ceiling doors that lead out to a pool and unobstructed views of the Hollywood Hills for miles, this luxurious residence is truly state-of-the-art.

After that, we join Andrew Heid, founder of No Architecture, in the West Village for a tour of a jaw-dropping home dubbed “The Urban Treehouse.” Heid and his team transformed the space from two modernist white box apartments into one large open home configured as a 2-bedroom that boasts warmth, natural light, an organic palette of natural, muted materials. From the practical functionality (where even every door offers storage or an opportunity to create a private enclosure at night) to the compressed pantry area that opens into the “wow factor” — a main, double-height living space, filled with 24-ft glass windows that look out right into the New York landscape, that offers dramatic scale and two defining treehouse areas for dining and relaxing. With their light, interactive structure and transparent nets, as well as the large concrete, fiber-reinforced planters that create a relationship between the trees outside versus the indoor ones, these treehouses serve as giant, dynamic pieces of furniture and are perfect for entertaining and enjoying breathtaking views of NYC. This dream project embodies, as Heid best puts it, “the spiritual harmony between architecture and nature.”

Next up: We join agent Cathy Taub on the Upper West Side for a peek inside a terrace penthouse on the Upper West Side in a building designed by architect William Boring. Not only is it spacious, it features its own landing, a wrap terrace with distinctive landmark architectural touches, a primary suite with a spa-like bathroom, and a great room with a marble-clad gas fireplace, tray ceiling with perimeter lighting throughout, and floor-to-ceiling French doors. As for the bonus element? A SECOND private rooftop terrace with multiple seating areas perfect for hosting guests and sweeping views of the city.

Last, we join interior designer Bradley Bayou in Palm Springs for a full tour of his unique home (originally owned by Bob Hope) that he bought over two decades ago. It was in great disrepair when he first purchased it, but he completely transformed it into a personable, welcoming space — complete with sentimental touches, pieces from his own collection and great finds from local businesses, colors inspired by the natural beauty outside, and a lounge area with a pool — that captures the essence of comfortable and serene desert living.

FULL EPISODE: Cinematic Estates & Luxurious Homes in New York & Southern California | Open House TV

FULL EPISODE: Cinematic Estates & Luxurious Homes in New York & Southern California | Open House TV

12Join Open House host Sara Gore for a tour of unique and gorgeous homes with sweeping views in New York City and Southern California.

First stop: 285 Lafayette Street, Unit 7AB. Brett Mitchell takes us on a tour of this flagship penthouse in Nolita that was a former chocolate factory that has been reimagined into an entertainer’s paradise and features 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 half baths, large bar area, chef’s quality kitchen with an eight-burner oven and two refrigerators, a walk-in dressing room, and multiple living spaces (including a private foyer flanked by two massive living spaces — one with an informal vibe and one for more elegant soirees) that flow into two huge terraces that are the epitome of al fresco dining. Filled with natural light, this home offers 360° of exposure, Brazilian mahogany floors, low-profile furniture that accentuates the high ceilings, and feels like a floating abode in downtown Manhattan.

Then, we fly over to the West Coast to join Guy Ravid for a tour of a futuristic estate, located in Encinitas, CA (532 Neptune Avenue, to be exact), nicknamed “The Crescent House” after its curved walls and vertebrae staircase, circular courtyard, and unique crescent-shaped infinity pool. Designed by visionary architect Wallace E. Cunningham, this massive property (as seen in WESTWORLD Season 3) is a sculptural masterpiece that boasts five bedrooms, four bathrooms, two half-baths, a private elevator, and interior living space all highlighted by concrete and steel and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this striking 6329 sq. ft. beachside home — with its stunning panoramic views, geometric intricacies, multiple tiered decks and patios, and East/West-facing plan that allows for a dramatic intake of light at all times of day — is a great example of “modern meets minimal” and truly one of a kind.

Next, we link up with interior designer Marie Burgos to learn more about her latest project: an exquisite home located in Carroll Gardens. This Brooklyn abode was inspired by her client’s Brazilian heritage and is a perfect fusion of functionality meets art, as well as a celebration of life, love, and nature — as noted through the impeccable millwork that serves as a defining feature, as well as the touches of greenery infused throughout the space. From the natural materials and curved sofa in the open-concept living room and the modern kitchen with a cozy breakfast nook that captures the feeling of dining on the beach, to the dreamy nursery room complete with custom wallpaper that’s full of whimsy and the family room on the garden level that includes a hidden bar and entry to a private backyard, this home radiates with warmth and wonder.

After that, we zip over to Tribeca to visit Colin King’s live/work loft. The interior designer and author of ‘Arranging Things’ — in an effort to accommodate his growing firm — transformed this airy apartment, located inside an old industrial building, into a space that feels cozy and inviting, and inspires creativity and relaxation throughout the day. Despite being intimidated by the size of the apartment, Colin fell in love with its bones and all the natural light, and found detailed ways to personalize it and make it feel like home, including: the entrance via elevator, original pinewood floors, the sauna-like primary bedroom with its low-profile bed, deep reddish-brown hues, and cavernous paneling; and an office that serves as an incubator for ideas with its 18th century baroque table, Akari lantern by Noguchi, inspirational images, custom bookshelves to house some of his collection, and an oversized shearling chair perfect for curling up in with a good read. With a design that evokes a sense of calm and beauty — as epitomized by the well-lit living space with its soft beige tone, dramatic tree (re: large branch held in place by a bunch of sand bags), 12-ft Stay Bed that anchors the room, and vintage finds from his travels — this home is a good representation of things that bring him joy.

Last but not least, we head over to the Hamptons to join Andrea Anthony (and her adorable pup Vinny), one of the owners of the famed Lobster Roll restaurant, aka LUNCH, for a tour of her beach cottage located in Amagansett. With its laidback den (complete with stone floors, fossils, and a player piano), large decks around the house (one for sunbathing and taking a dip in the pool and a pergola for unwinding under the shade while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings), and an upper level with open, airy kitchen and gorgeous views of the bay. Overall: a slice of paradise that is as welcoming as she is!
