Functional Meets Playful in Melanie Morris's NYC Pied-à-Terre in Nolita | Open House TV

Welcome to interior designer Melanie Morris’s pied-à-terre in Nolita, which she shares with her husband and three teenage sons. This open-concept, functional home features earthy tones, furniture from the Kenmare collection (including an oatmeal-hued sofa, a dark stone coffee table, and a credenza with ambrosia maple tones and dark fluted wood that was designed specifically for the apartment), and a playful sense of design as best captured by the ceramic overhead light fixture in the dining room and the calming pop of color in the master suite (which includes ombre-glazed walls, a vintage light fixture from the 1960s, views of the World Trade Center, and soft, curved pieces with brass accents). Every space not only feels unique through unexpected touches & careful delineation (as evidenced by the rug from her Pop Collection that separates the living room into its own entity), but also allows its residents to remain connected to each other throughout the day.

Full Episode: Bold, Eye-Catching Design in New Orleans and New York City | Open House TV

Full Episode: Bold, Eye-Catching Design in New Orleans and New York City | Open House TV

Open House host Sara Gore takes us on a tour of several reimagined homes from NOLA in Louisiana to Nolita in New York City, and introduces this week’s episode from within a dramatic, 4-bedroom duplex penthouse located in a cast-iron building in Tribeca that features over 5,000 sq. ft. of luxury living and is designed for open-air enjoyment day and night.

We kick off the festivities with a trip to New Orleans to visit the bold, colorful, and vibrant home of production designer Hannah Beachler (and her adorable pup Miss Maxine, a.k.a. “the queen of the castle”), who won the 2019 Oscar for Best Production Design for “Black Panther” and has worked on a variety of acclaimed films, including “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed.” This 103-year-old Creole cottage built in 1920 is painted black on the outside (hence the nickname Black Daydream), and inside features a cinematic design aesthetic that pays homage to the gracious splendor of the Big Easy and captures a sense of modernity in something old (as displayed by the black fireplace in her bedroom and the steam punk-inspired kitchen, which includes a bird mural, cypress-wood shelves, and Industrial Age iron-and-glass cabinet guard doors on a rail). From the entry hallway that serves as a visual progression of her career and life to the elegant yet whimsical enclave that’s separated by a credenza (traditionally, Creole cottages did not have dining rooms) that’s perfect for entertaining guests, Hannah’s home features an overall design that focuses on texture (e.g. a South African beaded chandelier that juxtaposes the Victorian state of the chairs in the dining area), color-blocking full of saturated hues, and Afrofuturism art (including a nature motif and African masks from the movie “Miles Ahead”) that not only tells a story, but retells how ancestral history is told.

After that, we journey over to midtown to explore the New York City home of Leesa Rowland — cult film star, animal activist, and author of “The Charisma Factor: Unlock the Secrets of Magnetic Charm and Personal Influence in Your Life.” Leesa wanted her living space to be a reflection of her vivacious personality and the things she loves, which begins with an entranceway that makes an impression and features custom gold doors and black & white marble floors. From the bright entertaining area that’s a toast to Hollywood glam (and features a bar, lounge area with swivel chairs, a stone fireplace that serves as the focal point, and needlework pillows made by her mother) to the dining room that includes a prominent chandelier, an Armani table, gorgeous velvet Jonathan Adler chairs, and antique mirrors that add depth, to a walk-in closet complete with beautiful couture, vanity table, and views for days, this apartment is as comfortable as it is fabulous.

We then swing by 551 West 21st Street in West Chelsea for a tour of apartment 14A led by Calli Sarkesh. Conceived and designed by architecture firm Foster & Partners, this 4-bedroom, 4.5-bath apartment is filled with natural light and is elegant yet functional. It features 4271 sq. ft. of fine living space that fuses a classic aesthetic with a modern one and includes custom millwork, a contemporary layout, herringbone oak floors, an elegant gallery; a 70-ft long great room that serves as the centerpiece of the place with an intimate library at the end; an exquisite kitchen designed for social gatherings with integrated oak cabinetry & cozy breakfast nook; a powder room; a primary suite that serves as a relaxing, pin-drop-quiet sanctuary with a wood-panel walk-in closet and private spa area; and best of all: perimeter seating throughout with stunning views of the Statue of Liberty.

Last but certainly not least, we drop by by interior designer Melanie Morris’s pied-à-terre in Nolita, which she shares with her husband and three teenage sons. FULL EPISODE: Cinematic Estates & Luxurious Homes in New York & Southern California | Open House TV

FULL EPISODE: Cinematic Estates & Luxurious Homes in New York & Southern California | Open House TV

12Join Open House host Sara Gore for a tour of unique and gorgeous homes with sweeping views in New York City and Southern California.

First stop: 285 Lafayette Street, Unit 7AB. Brett Mitchell takes us on a tour of this flagship penthouse in Nolita that was a former chocolate factory that has been reimagined into an entertainer’s paradise and features 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 half baths, large bar area, chef’s quality kitchen with an eight-burner oven and two refrigerators, a walk-in dressing room, and multiple living spaces (including a private foyer flanked by two massive living spaces — one with an informal vibe and one for more elegant soirees) that flow into two huge terraces that are the epitome of al fresco dining. Filled with natural light, this home offers 360° of exposure, Brazilian mahogany floors, low-profile furniture that accentuates the high ceilings, and feels like a floating abode in downtown Manhattan.

Then, we fly over to the West Coast to join Guy Ravid for a tour of a futuristic estate, located in Encinitas, CA (532 Neptune Avenue, to be exact), nicknamed “The Crescent House” after its curved walls and vertebrae staircase, circular courtyard, and unique crescent-shaped infinity pool. Designed by visionary architect Wallace E. Cunningham, this massive property (as seen in WESTWORLD Season 3) is a sculptural masterpiece that boasts five bedrooms, four bathrooms, two half-baths, a private elevator, and interior living space all highlighted by concrete and steel and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this striking 6329 sq. ft. beachside home — with its stunning panoramic views, geometric intricacies, multiple tiered decks and patios, and East/West-facing plan that allows for a dramatic intake of light at all times of day — is a great example of “modern meets minimal” and truly one of a kind.

Next, we link up with interior designer Marie Burgos to learn more about her latest project: an exquisite home located in Carroll Gardens. This Brooklyn abode was inspired by her client’s Brazilian heritage and is a perfect fusion of functionality meets art, as well as a celebration of life, love, and nature — as noted through the impeccable millwork that serves as a defining feature, as well as the touches of greenery infused throughout the space. From the natural materials and curved sofa in the open-concept living room and the modern kitchen with a cozy breakfast nook that captures the feeling of dining on the beach, to the dreamy nursery room complete with custom wallpaper that’s full of whimsy and the family room on the garden level that includes a hidden bar and entry to a private backyard, this home radiates with warmth and wonder.

After that, we zip over to Tribeca to visit Colin King’s live/work loft. The interior designer and author of ‘Arranging Things’ — in an effort to accommodate his growing firm — transformed this airy apartment, located inside an old industrial building, into a space that feels cozy and inviting, and inspires creativity and relaxation throughout the day. Despite being intimidated by the size of the apartment, Colin fell in love with its bones and all the natural light, and found detailed ways to personalize it and make it feel like home, including: the entrance via elevator, original pinewood floors, the sauna-like primary bedroom with its low-profile bed, deep reddish-brown hues, and cavernous paneling; and an office that serves as an incubator for ideas with its 18th century baroque table, Akari lantern by Noguchi, inspirational images, custom bookshelves to house some of his collection, and an oversized shearling chair perfect for curling up in with a good read. With a design that evokes a sense of calm and beauty — as epitomized by the well-lit living space with its soft beige tone, dramatic tree (re: large branch held in place by a bunch of sand bags), 12-ft Stay Bed that anchors the room, and vintage finds from his travels — this home is a good representation of things that bring him joy.

Last but not least, we head over to the Hamptons to join Andrea Anthony (and her adorable pup Vinny), one of the owners of the famed Lobster Roll restaurant, aka LUNCH, for a tour of her beach cottage located in Amagansett. With its laidback den (complete with stone floors, fossils, and a player piano), large decks around the house (one for sunbathing and taking a dip in the pool and a pergola for unwinding under the shade while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings), and an upper level with open, airy kitchen and gorgeous views of the bay. Overall: a slice of paradise that is as welcoming as she is!
