FULL SHOW: 5 Stunning & Energy-Efficient Homes in New York, California & Massachusetts | Open House

FULL SHOW: 5 Stunning & Energy-Efficient Homes in New York, California & Massachusetts | Open House

Welcome to another installment of NBC’s Open House with guest host Sara Gore. Join us as we visit five exquisite and environmentally responsible homes with unique characteristics (including a net zero residence) in New York, California, and Massachusetts!

First, we drop by 1110 Park Avenue: a lavish triplex penthouse on the Upper East Side. Eva Penson shows us around this 7,000-square-foot 5-bedroom home that is filled with luxurious custom details, including soaring 14-ft ceilings, oak hardwood floors; a beautiful marble fireplace; a discreet keyed elevator that opens into an elegant foyer; a show-stopping Baccarat chandelier; a kitchen designed by Christopher Peacock that features white Italian Statuario Piccolo marble countertops, hand-painted cabinetry, and a dining corner with an open view of the George Washington Bridge; and stylish-meets-serene bedroom suites with spa-like baths and generous closets. And the cherry on top? A massive 1,600-square-foot rooftop terrace with an endless swimming pool overlooking the Jackie Onassis Reservoir, outdoor kitchen, and sweeping views of the iconic Manhattan skyline, as well as balcony off the living room and nine Juliet balconies throughout.

After that, we journey to Manhattan Beach, California to explore architect Anthony Laney’s latest project: a home that is a celebration of indoor-outdoor living. His client, inspired by their travels to tropical locations, wanted something warm, comfortable, and approachable. And with its distinct scalloped concrete walls that not only structurally support the edifice but also move vertically throughout it, interacting with light and natural surroundings in fresh, unexpected ways — as well a kitchen that connects directly to the pool deck and features a built-in breakfast banquette and views of the garden; relaxing bedroom retreats that overlook the Pacific Ocean and include sliding windows that quite literally disappear, and a sunny space dubbed the “California room” that’s perfect for lounging and escaping the bustle of everyday life — this design exceeds all expectations and offers a sense of serenity and calm.

How do you go about designing a comfortable house to meet the challenges of a changing world? Join architect William Ruhl at his family’s oceanfront residence called Gap Cove House in Rockport, Massachusetts to see firsthand the thoughtful features he implemented when he renovated a old ranch style house into a net-zero home that is as stunning as it is sustainable. Perched just 25 feet above the waterline, this 1,800-square-foot light-filled home is sheathed in copper shingles to protect it from storms, includes invisible solar panels on the roof to generate electricity, and features a main living space with a front row seat to the Atlantic Ocean through a wall of glass and a two-story high wall covered in polycarbonate panels that borrows afternoon light from nearby skylights to help the space feel bigger. Overall, Gap Cove House maximizes energy efficiency and the surrounding majestic beauty to its fullest potential.

Next, we travel to Dobbs Ferry, NY to join homeowners Louise Pegg and Timothy Baker for a tour of their nearly 8,000 sq ft residence that is an eco-friendly architectural dream come to life. Nestled on a private cul-de-sac, this home has a interesting silhouette with its barreled rooftops and an easy flow between both the vast interiors and bucolic exteriors. Warm wooden accents and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace comprised of local limestone make this space, with its 25-ft high ceilings, feel nothing less than cozy. From a catwalk that runs along the side of the house to a rooftop lounge area with views of the Hudson River to a wall of windows that opens up out onto a terraced area , this spacious family home is functional, visually captivating, and inviting.

Finally, we drop by Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn for a tour of a net-zero townhouse, originally built in 1889, that offers a fresh take on modern day living in New York City. Architects Bobby Johnston and Ruth Mandl — principals of Co-Adaptive Architecture — fully embrace the ethos of a sustainable future in their work and their restoration of a 17th century residence into a space that is ready for whatever the future might bring certainly showcases it. Not only did they maximize their home to its full potential with modern upgrades, they also left in old-fashioned details that allowed them to preserve the architectural integrity and sprinkle in some personality. Through elegant and simple touches (including beautiful windows shrouded in exposed apple ply that insulate the home, mid-century modern walnut furnishings in the primary bedroom, a library sorted by color, and floors made out of Pennsylvania white oak) this passive home provides a quiet, comfortable place to unwind and be yourself — all while having minimal impact on the planet.

Full Episode: Curated Interiors & Design Drama with a Hint of Nostalgia | Open House TV

Full Episode: Curated Interiors & Design Drama with a Hint of Nostalgia | Open House TV

In this latest episode of Open House, host Sara Gore introduces us to five breathtaking spaces (including the iconic Brady Bunch house) that are located in New York City and Los Angeles.

First, we meet with real estate agent Leonard Steinberg in downtown New York City for a look around 33 Park Row PH3: a duplex penthouse in the Financial District (located in the first and last residential building in the United States that was designed by architect Sir Richard Rogers) that boasts 5,403 square feet, 5 beds / 5.5 baths, a dramatic great room with 22 ft tall ceilings; a mezzanine; 2 private, separate elevator landings; magnificent floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlook Tribeca and City Hall Park; a 1,08SF loggia terrace with direct, protected park-front exposures; a tranquil primary bedroom suite that is reminiscent of a European spa; and an open-plan ORNARE kitchen that features masterful craftsmanship, custom double-height cabinetry, and sleek material selection. This luxurious boutique home, situated in a dynamic neighborhood, is currently listed for a cool $19,500,000.

After that, we zip over to Studio City, CA on the West Coast for a bit of television history: a tour of the Brady Bunch house with agent Danny Brown. This 5-bedroom mid-century residence, which served as the exterior for the hit sitcom throughout its run, has since been renovated to replicate many of the show’s familiar 1970s aesthetic touches —including the iconic staircase, living room with the brick finish where the family hung out, open floor concept with architectural beams and big sliding doors, and the retro kitchen with its formica orange counters & sea-green cabinets where Alice used to whip up ‘pork chop and applesauce’ dinners.

Next, interior designer Elizabeth Gordon gives us a tour of her charming Los Angeles home that is full of warmth and stylish details. This lovely mid-city residence features a mix of modern and vintage furnishings and unique textures that come together to create a space that is not only eclectic but personal as well. From the conversational art collection displayed in the living room to the dining room with its hand-hammered brass bar from Indonesia and table fashioned out of reclaimed wood, this residence teems with curated pieces that have unique stories to tell.

After that, Katie Lydon shows us around a stunning Midtown East apartment that overlooks Park Avenue. Upon being tasked with this renovation project a few years ago, the first item on her checklist was to open it up to allow natural light to flow throughout the space and maximize its full potential. From the dramatic entryway that packs a “wow” factor with its theme of reflective surfaces (as evidenced in the intricate floors and fantastic console & mirror set) to the use of high lacquer paint on the ceilings to give the illusion of height, this custom-built abode is full of sophisticated and surprising details.

Last but not least, interior designer William McIntosh (Bill) takes viewers on a tour of 432 Park Avenue, which is home to some of the most rare real estate in NYC. His client desired a pied-à-terre in the city that felt smart, sophisticated, and comfortable but also wanted to avoid a complete renovation. See how Bill’s subtle one-of-a-kind decor choices that your attention and give you a hint of what’s to come! (Spoiler alert, here’s what to expect: a spectacular living room, impressive square windows that flood every room with light; a carpet that is an abstracted map of the city; alpaca-covered swivel chairs perfect for relaxing and entertaining; a paneled library that houses many interesting books and features a gleamy lacquered ceiling overhead and leather-covered desk suspended within the window reveal; a modern sky lounge area complete with an illuminated onyx bar top and underlit steps; and sky-high views that make you feel as though you’re sleeping in the clouds.)

These Architects Designed Their Sherman Oaks Dream House from the Ground Up | Open House TV

Zip over to Los Angeles to visit with partners in architecture and life, Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough, for a tour of their striking Sherman Oaks home that they designed from the ground up. Inspired by the beautiful views right outside, they incorporated different materials and textures from the building itself, as well as interior plants and layered architectural features such as a chimney, to create a separation of space and maximize an indoor-outdoor flow. From the moody living room with its circular lounge sofa and steel shelf to host their impressive record collection, to the dining room that was designed with a focal art piece fashioned out of mini discs for a pixelated effect, a skylight above to make the most of natural light, and a log on wheels as a seating option, to the verdant roof garden and backyard that both offer ideal reading nooks, this home exudes creativity, personality, and a sense of calm.

Full Show: Inventive Interiors & Stunning Architecture | Open House TV

Full Show: Inventive Interiors & Stunning Architecture | Open House TV

In this week’s episode of NBC’s Open House, host Sara Gore shines the spotlight on memorable homes in Los Angeles, Savannah, and New York City featuring the very designers and architects who brought these inventive aesthetics to life.

We kick things off with interior designer Sasha Bikoff and her adorable pup Puff. See how she transformed an 1820s townhouse in the West Village into a maximalist celebration of all that she loves: bold patterns, unapologetic bursts of color, and a vibrant aesthetic that is equal parts Marie Antoinette meets Studio 54. From the open-concept main level that combines countryside charm through its 16th century French Braquenie wallpaper and antique Persian Tabriz rug — as well as a sense of modernity through fun touches such as a 1960s French Space Age PR pollard chair and contemporary coffee table from Glass Italia that is a spectrum of rainbow hues — to the tranquil garden patio right outside the kitchen (blue lacquered cabinetry blue and rose-gold hardware, anyone?) that is perfect for hosting dinner parties on warmer days, this home is dreamy, upbeat, and utterly inviting. As for the top floor? The entire section houses the primary bedroom and exudes a sensual Italian theme with a vanity mirror that greets you at the top of the stairs, sexy leopard-print wallpaper, a crushed velvet headboard, throw pillows that embrace a Baroque motif, scroll-work drapes with a satin trim, and an Eames lounge chair that is an heirloom passed along from her husband’s family.

We then zip over to Los Angeles to visit with partners in architecture and life, Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough, for a tour of their striking Sherman Oaks home that they designed from the ground up. Inspired by the beautiful views right outside, they incorporated different materials and textures from the building itself, as well as interior plants and layered architectural features such as a chimney, to create a separate of space and maximize an indoor-outdoor flow. From the moody living room with its circular lounge sofa and steel shelf to host their impressive record collection, to the dining room that was designed with a focal art piece fashioned out of mini discs for a pixelated effect, a skylight above to make the most of natural light, and a log on wheels as a seating option, to the verdant roof garden and backyard that offer ideal reading nooks, this home exudes creativity, personality, and a sense of calm.

Next up, we return to New York City for a tour of a home that offers stunning views of the George Washington Bridge through a large corner window, as well as a “Havana on the Hudson” vibe. This is the aesthetic that architect Adam Rolston and his partner had in mind upon renovating their 1930s Art Deco-style apartment in Washington Heights. While their home respects the integrity of the original architecture, they chose to capture the beautiful patina seen on Havana’s historic buildings through an integral colored plaster beginning in the foyer. They also enlivened the space with color that physically aligns with the outdoor setting, personal touches influenced by their travels, furniture inspired by the glamour of the 1980s (as is reflected through a triangular coffee table that is a combination of oxidized brass and chrome, as well as a collection of Jay Spectre art and wing-back chair that pays homage to a Scandinavian designer from that era), and plenty of greenery.

We then join interior designer Lily Brown in Savannah, Georgia for a tour of a downtown historic townhouse that overlooks Monterey Square. This bespoke home (originally built in the 1850s) was a renovation project she took on for a client a few years ago, with a focus on honoring its traditional charm and architectural integrity — all while infusing a sense of sophistication and functionality across the 3000 sq. ft. space through a fresh cohesive design. From the oval lighting fixture and custom-made wooden table in the dining room that create interest that you see through multiple points of the home, to the kitchen that is framed by wooden panels (part of the original exterior wall) and features a black refrigerator, chef’s range with brass strapping perfect for cooking, and white cabinetry set against a textured marble backsplash, this residence effortlessly dovetails the new with the old in a refined and elevated way.

Our last stop is on the Upper East Side, where we join interior designer Philip Thomas for a tour of a pre-war apartment he renovated for a client. From lining the walls in pearlescent vinyl with a stingray embossing and the ceilings in a golden mother-of-pearl mosaic that complements the celestial feel of the chandelier to the private library teeming with books, Thomas maximizes color and implements modern materials in this classic NYC space — a notable juxtaposition that makes it feel bright and fresh at every turn.

Inside 5 Ultra Chic Homes with One-of-a-Kind Details | Open House TV

Welcome to another edition of Open House! In this episode, our lovely host Sara Gore guides us through several tours of gorgeous homes in New York City and Los Angeles that are full of style, natural light, and one-of-a-kind details.

First up, we drop by the West Village to visit 652 Hudson Street, 5S/6S New York, NY for a tour, led by Julianne Bond, of a reimagined 6,151 sq. ft. triplex penthouse that features 3 beds/3baths/2 half baths — along with 31 large windows, a wood-burning fireplace, and its own roof deck with views of downtown NYC — and is currently listed on the market for a cool $14,950,000.

After that, we fly over to the West Coast to visit the impressive private residence of Scottish-born, LA-residing television presenter Ross King that offers direct views of the iconic Hollywood sign, and features personal details and “bits of home” throughout, including: a studio for his televised segments and voiceover work, a cozy cuddle chair section inspired by a James Bond movie along with a Jackie Collins sofa, memorabilia and photos of people he’s interviewed and met throughout his career, and thistle (an emblem of Scotland) upon entry.

Next, we venture over to Santa Monica, California to 175 W Channel Road, for a tour of owner, designer, and entrepreneur LeeAnn Sauter’s home. This Mediterranean-style estate boasts 3,664 square feet, 5 beds, and 3.5 baths, and is full of charm and personalized details throughout its chic interiors, reflecting a life of travel and adventure. Oh, and fun fact? It was originally built in 1925 for Hollywood legend Mae West. The home’s unique history and authentic flow is best captured in “The Great Gatsby” room, which embodies the glamorous essence of the Jazz Age. In this room, Sauter kept everything original from the beautiful window to the wood floors to the hand-painted wallpaper to the chandelier with the chains draping over a lucite table.

We then return to New York City to meet up with Sarah Abdallah, founder and CEO of Functional Creative Design for a look around her latest impressive project: a pied-à-terre on the Upper East Side that she designed for a client seeking a luxurious retreat to escape to. Tasked with creating a space that felt like “the dreamiest suite at a boutique hotel,” Abdallah focused on materials and soft textures that allow for easy entertaining and inspire a sense of tranquility and balance.

To round off this installment, we explore the vibrant Hell’s Kitchen townhouse of interior designer Karim Rashid. Rashid is as well known for his luminous style as he is for the impassioned belief that dynamic design can make you happier – and in turn make the world a better place — and his home, with its rounded, amorphous artwork, fluid patterns, and colorful dimensions, is a direct reflection of his personal philosophy.
