Full Show: Unique Homes Full of Creative Touches | Open House TV

Ready to explore more beautiful houses in New York, Los Angeles, and Connecticut? Open House host Sara Gore offers viewers a peek into several distinct properties that calm and inspire!

Kicking things off is Ippolita Rostagno, a jewelry designer and founder of Artemest known for her bold designs, takes #OpenHouseTV inside her live-work townhouse this weekend on @NBC. Tune in to explore this stunning Park Slope home and studio, which features an original structure that has been modernized and is juxtaposed with decorative art and furnishings. ✨ Prepare to be inspired by her maximalist aesthetic, which she describes as “simplicity meets Baroque details,” as well as joyful touches (such as the dining area in her serene garden and the commissioned Florentine mirror in her bedroom) that pay homage to her Italian culture.

Next, Chaz Dean, an in-demand celebrity hairstylist and founder of WEN hair and skin products, embraces all three when it comes to creating a zen-like calm in his Los Feliz home. From the warm and relaxing atmosphere in the inner sanctuary that is the primary suite (complete with cork wallpaper!) to an entertaining area that features three interconnected paintings that depict meaningful moments from his life, to the spacious garden blooming right outside in his backyard, this stunning residence is full of comfortable, welcoming and tranquil touches.

After that, art and design converge with functionality in an innovative space in Brooklyn. Join architect and artist Umberto Bellardi Ricci for a tour of his minimalist studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yard — which showcases prototypes, pieces at every stage of their design, and folded metalwork that plays with light — where he creates unique sculptural works of art against the magnificent skyline of Manhattan. We then follow him over to Clinton Hill, Brooklyn to visit his family home, which features industrial, mass-produced pieces that are juxtaposed with warm and personal textures and materials. The main inspiration? “I want to make sure that the pieces are beautiful to look at, but also comfortable to live with.”

“What architecture has the ability to do, is combine traditional materials with new technologies that let us see things in a different way.” Architect Eric Liftin (and his adorable pup Luna) leads us on a tour of his personal home that does exactly that. When Eric first found this place, it was completely raw but the continual views of the water captured his attention since they expand the space and help it feel larger. From the sofa in the living room that’s situated in front of the fireplace and brings everyone together to the repurposed lights made out of lights to the carpet from Istanbul that adorns the all-purpose dining room upstairs that’s made out of recycled materials, the interior design in the home is welcoming and uncluttered, but full of interesting touches and textures that draw you in. “It is never a blank minimalism that is alienating,” Eric explains in the episode.

We conclude this installment with a visit to Southern Connecticut to visit one of architect Eric J. Smith’s projects. Eric was hired to design a writer’s studio on his client’s bucolic Greenwich property— a place in which the muse is always welcome — that was purpose built for the pursuit of poetry. And inspired by the surrounding natural environment and notion that every home tells a story, Eric set out to create a woodland haven that captures his client’s boyhood fascination with Thoreau’s cabin and reinterprets his creative writing process by embracing solitude, solace, and the pursuit of art.

A Modern Take on a Classic A-Frame Home in Lake Tahoe | Open House TV

A Modern Take on a Classic A-Frame Home in Lake Tahoe | Open House TV

Drop by Lake Tahoe for a look at a modern take on a classic home with an A-frame silhouette that was conceived by architect Todd Maher. We learn more about what inspired the imagining of this traditional mountain ski-cabin — aptly named Phoenix Rising after it was built from the literal ashes of a quintessential lake cottage — and how he morphed this symmetrical building into a warm and inviting abode full of geometric surprises and functional upgrades — including, but not limited to: a wood-burning fireplace in the great room, along with decorative beams and a circular multi-layered chandelier that binds the space together; a kitchen that embraces natural light and the beautiful views outside through bar seating under the cabinet window; a curved staircase for a touch of whimsey; and an intricate roofing pattern that is applied indoors as well.

Explore a Net-Zero Oceanfront Home in Rockport, Massachusetts | Open House TV

Explore a Net-Zero Oceanfront Home in Rockport, Massachusetts | Open House TV

How do you go about designing a comfortable house to meet the challenges of a changing world? Join architect William Ruhl at his family’s oceanfront environmentally responsible residence called Gap Cove House in Rockport, Massachusetts to see firsthand the thoughtful features he implemented when he renovated a old ranch style house into a net-zero home that is as beautiful as it is sustainable.

Perched just 25 feet above the nearby waterline, this 1,800-square-foot light-filled home is sheathed in copper shingles on three of its four sides to protect it from storms while also matching the soft greenish-gray color of the lichen on the rocks. Additionally, it includes invisible solar panels on the roof to generate electricity, as well a main living space that features a front row seat to the Atlantic Ocean through a wall of glass and a two-story high wall covered in polycarbonate panels that borrows afternoon light from the skylights and helps the space feel bigger; a kitchen with a large stone island (the patterning on the material almost evokes seaweed) where everyone gathers, cabinets above, and frosted windows that reflect the natural views outside; and a light and delicate staircase — with a railing that is evocative of dappled sunlight on water and gangplank at the top — that is fashioned in a way that you can see the ocean through it.

Overall, Gap Cove House maximizes both energy efficiency and the surrounding majestic beauty.

Welcome to another installment of NBC’s Open House with guest host Sara Gore. Join us as we visit five exquisite and environmentally responsible homes with unique characteristics (including a net zero residence) in New York, California, and Massachusetts!

First, we drop by 1110 Park Avenue: a lavish triplex penthouse on the Upper East Side. Eva Penson shows us around this 7,000-square-foot 5-bedroom home that is filled with luxurious custom details, including soaring 14-ft ceilings, oak hardwood floors; a beautiful marble fireplace; a discreet keyed elevator that opens into an elegant foyer; a show-stopping Baccarat chandelier; a kitchen designed by Christopher Peacock that features white Italian Statuario Piccolo marble countertops, hand-painted cabinetry, and a dining corner with an open view of the George Washington Bridge; and stylish-meets-serene bedroom suites with spa-like baths and generous closets. And the cherry on top? A massive 1,600-square-foot rooftop terrace with an endless swimming pool overlooking the Jackie Onassis Reservoir, outdoor kitchen, and sweeping views of the iconic Manhattan skyline, as well as balcony off the living room and nine Juliet balconies throughout.

After that, we journey to Manhattan Beach, California to explore architect Anthony Laney’s latest project: a home that is a celebration of indoor-outdoor living. Overall, Gap Cove House maximizes energy efficiency and the surrounding majestic beauty to its fullest potential.

Next, we travel to Dobbs Ferry, NY to join homeowners Louise Pegg and Timothy Baker for a tour of their nearly 8,000 sq ft residence that is an eco-friendly architectural dream come to life. Nestled on a private cul-de-sac, this home has a interesting silhouette with its barreled rooftops and an easy flow between both the vast interiors and bucolic exteriors. Warm wooden accents and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace comprised of local limestone make this space, with its 25-ft high ceilings, feel nothing less than cozy. From a catwalk that runs along the side of the house to a rooftop lounge area with views of the Hudson River to a wall of windows that opens up out onto a terraced area , this spacious family home is functional, visually captivating, and inviting.

Finally, we drop by Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn for a tour of a net-zero townhouse, originally built in 1889, that offers a fresh take on modern day living in New York City. Architects Bobby Johnston and Ruth Mandl — principals of Co-Adaptive Architecture — fully embrace the ethos of a sustainable future in their work and their restoration of a 17th century residence into a space that is ready for whatever the future might bring certainly showcases it. Not only did they maximize their home to its full potential with modern upgrades, they also left in old-fashioned details that allowed them to preserve the architectural integrity and sprinkle in some personality. Through elegant and simple touches (including beautiful windows shrouded in exposed apple ply that insulate the home, mid-century modern walnut furnishings in the primary bedroom, a library sorted by color, and floors made out of Pennsylvania white oak) this passive home provides a quiet, comfortable place to unwind and be yourself — all while having minimal impact on the planet.
