Ready for another fun-packed adventure with our lovely Open Host host Sara Gore, as she leads us through multiple home tours in New York and California? And this week’s estates are full of sprightly design elements and a captivating blend of architectural styles.
We kick things off at the New York City home of David Saint, a renowned theater director who served as the associate producer of ‘West Side Story’ with Steven Spielberg and was the protégé of the esteemed Broadway legend Arthur Laurents. Located right off Union Square in a building comprised mostly of glass, steel, and chrome, this East Village abode — which he shares with his adorable pup/trusted assistant Gatsby and spans over 2,000 square feet of luxurious space — exudes warmth, charm, and personality. From the great room and adjoining dining room that blend contemporary and vintage aesthetics (e,g. pairing a rustic table with a Baccarat crystal chandelier and contemporary candelabra to add a sense of balance) to the living room that contains meaningful pieces such as a chair that Arthur used to hold court in, a bookcase full of awards and memorabilia, and a moving sculpture that depicts a young man looking through the eyes of an older man, this stunning duplex is a true labor of love and design.
A moment for a quick hair check, please, as we step into the next gorgeous abode! Celebrity hairstylists and beauty gurus Jason Backe & Ted Gibson invite us for a spirited tour (which — spoiler alert — includes a costume change!) of their vibrant desert dream home. Located in Palm Springs, California, this residence is infused with a design aesthetic that they describe as Bohemian maximalism, meticulous details that tell a good story, and plenty of personality. As artists, they aim to include bright bursts of color in each room and the main living space – with its quilt-patterned coffee table, eclectic throw pillows, and custom furniture of various hues – and the dining room (lovingly nicknamed Catrina Resort), with its Nelson bubble lamp, antler candelabras, mid_century table & chair set that they thrifted for $100, and yellow accented china — definitely reflects their philosophy. From unique pieces that they’ve picked up throughout their extensive travels around the world to a wall of framed gifts from friends, family members, and clients (including Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o), this sparkling estate is full of meaningful, creative touches.
After that, we join Ariel Putman for a look around Domestead, one of the most distinctive homes in Los Angeles. Built by architect William King in 1982, this 2-bedroom, multi-level abode is located at 2538 Sundown Drive in the Glassell Park area of the city and features intriguing architectural details and an avant-garde design. From its expansive geodesic dome with triangular paneled windows to a lower granite level with a hidden nook of a bedroom that’s tucked behind the wall and illuminated with skylights to an airy, modern kitchen that teems with natural light and is comprised of five different types of wood — including pine and redwood — this residence offers a completely unique living experience across its 1,800 square feet of free-flowing space.
We top off this week’s Open House episode, with a tour of 21 W 11th Street. Real estate agent Mara Flash Blum shows us around this historic townhouse, located in the heart of Greenwich Village, that has been completely reimagined. From the front gate that features an intricate palm tree & sheep design to a spacious living room that’s grand enough for two seating areas and opens into a formal dining room that overlooks a glass-enclosed atrium and invites in plenty of natural light to lovely views that extend from the tree-lined street outside all the way through to your personal perennial garden in the backyard, this Greek Revival Federal Style home (also known as the Scatturo House) is full of resplendent details.
