HOME TOURS: Power Couples & Jaw-dropping Design | Open House TV

HOME TOURS: Power Couples & Jaw-dropping Design | Open House TV

Ready to explore more beautiful homes across New York and California? Open House host Sara Gore leads the way as we step into five more stunning spaces in this week’s all new episode.

We kick things off with real estate gurus Tarek El Moussa & Heather Rae El Moussa, who are known for dishing out helpful tips and hacks on HGTV, invite us into their warm and spacious Newport Beach, California home that they share with their three children and adorable pup Buggy. Their vision for this renovation was a sleek hotel aesthetic, which they accomplished through custom wallpaper, a bar area that greets visitors upon stepping through the front doors and is accented with a bright statement piece chandelier, as well as black countertop and chairs, and a chic-yet-functional style that reflects their unique personalities and needs of their family.

We then step inside the stylish loft of Hannah Bronfman and Brendan Fallis. See how the entrepreneurial power couple transformed this cavernous downtown NYC factory warehouse into a contemporary dream home for them and their two young children, Preston and Claude. Since purchasing their home a little over four years ago, they have been renovating it into a triplex that includes a mezzanine level that consists of the primary suite, main level, and lower level with two bedrooms, media room, and a conservatory (atrium). Overall, they wanted to create a home that felt warm and inviting, but could also accommodate large groups for family gatherings and dinner parties — so they turned the living room into an optimal entertaining area with an open-floor setting, plush communal sofa, record bar, and large coffee table. As for one of the focal points in this expansive space is an overhead art piece light fixture called the ‘floss coordinates’ that’s actually five different chandeliers that’s been worked up into a cone and not only pulls in the brass from the mirrors left behind by the previous owner but also draws you into the center of the space.

After that, architect Leah Solk invites us into a recently completed project: a brownstone in Greenwich Village. One of her goals in renovating this historic New York City apartment (originally constructed in 1839) was to revitalize it, open it up so that you could see through it from front to back, and fill it with warmth and character — all while maintaining its architectural integrity — which results in a beautiful fusion of modernism and Greek revival elements. From the multipurpose vestibule with its whimsical ‘Alice in Wonderland’-themed wallpaper to the communal living/dining room with a wood-burning fireplace and large windows that flood the area with natural light, this floor-through home offers visual flourishes along with versatile functionality.

Next: Get ready to step into an eclectic house of oddities and curiosities. Artist and animator Mike Guerena, who’s worked on television series such as ‘Mission Hill’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ invites Open House viewers into his private home in Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California that he shares with his wife and shows us around his rare, unique, and “strange” collectibles. According to Guerena, who is an avid collector of art and memorabilia, guests are usually pretty shocked at all the items he’s amassed over the years, but to him they are treasure finds that have more to do with creativity and personal interests than how much they’re worth. “I just like the way it looks — the beauty of it,” he explains. “I can tell you a story about every little thing on that wall.”

Finally, we wrap up the episode with a trip to Bellport, New York to join designer Phillip Thomas for a tour of one of his gorgeous projects that fosters a sense of fun from the moment you walk in and was designed to share with friends and family regardless of the occasion. He shows us around his client’s home which is expansive yet intimate, and encourages easy celebration inside and out.

Inside a 1920s Hollywood Villa that Exudes Mediterranean Charm | Open House TV

Inside a 1920s Hollywood Villa that Exudes Mediterranean Charm | Open House TV

Martyn Lawrence Bullard, an AD100 interior designer who’s worked with celebrities such as Cher and wrote the recently published book ‘Star Style,’ invites into his stunning 1920s villa that was built in the heart of Hollywood and exudes an ambiance of luxury, intrigue, and Mediterranean charm.

Bullard originally designed the home for Craig Kilborn about 20 years ago, but upon purchasing the property for himself, he decided to infuse his own personal style in a way that provides flow, sparkle, and inspirational elements of surprise. One of the ways he achieved this was by installing metal frame windows, adding lighting fixtures made out of bronze and horse hair for a moment of unconventional flair, and commissioning an artist to paint a section of the ceiling in an intricate tile print (as seen on the magnificent fireplace) for a bit of Moroccan flavor.

Other points of visual interest include: golden palm trees that once belonged to legendary fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and add layering to the space; an intimate den that’s reminiscent of a tent (inspired by his trip to an old palace in Istanbul) and is adorned with little decorative tables that hold treats for movie nights; a emerald jewelry box bar area — that exudes a glamorous glow with its high-gloss lacquer ceiling, tropical jungle wallpaper, and antique mirror on the back of the paneling — that opens into an outdoor firepit lounge perfect for entertaining guests; a green kitchen that features a zellige backsplash which features traditional glazed tiles handcrafted in Morocco, as well as custom cabinetry fashioned out of Mashrabiya — Middle Eastern latticed screenwork often seen in mosques and temples — that incorporate antique brass and brass knobs and handles; a dining area that incorporates the same shade of green used in the kitchen island in its drapery and features a stunning sculptural chandelier for a contemporary touch; and a bedroom that serves as a welcoming sanctuary with its rich textures, tropical tree-themed wallpaper, and grandiose four-post bed.

A Vibrant Home in the Pacific Palisades Designed from the Ground Up | Open House TV

A Vibrant Home in the Pacific Palisades Designed from the Ground Up | Open House TV

Join Alison Palevsky, an interior designer based in Santa Monica, California, for a look around a house in the Pacific Palisades that she and her team designed from the ground up. See how she turned this open floor space into a vibrant, functional home full of natural light and visual interest through a mix of sustainable materials and an aesthetic that combines vintage and contemporary pieces.

One of the challenges to designing a residence of this size is that they often feel like white boxes. However, Palevsky found a workaround solution by using the black windows and doors to her team’s advantage and creating a sense of continuity and flow. Some standout moments from this home tour include: the black-and-steel lighting fixtures seen throughout that add a sculptural element to each room; the spacious dining room and main entertaining space that are divided by two consoles arranged to appear as one, and feature a custom-built cabinet with a movable panel, an Old Hollywood-esque oak coffee table that has a gold-painted patina set into its engraved lines, and a cozy section that incorporates the same materials seen in the bookshelf and walnut wood on the fireplace mantle; a kitchen that features stunning stonework with its light quartz that serves as a nice contrast agains the darker-toned cabinetry; an outdoor seating area that is perfect for hosting al fresco dinner gatherings; and a primary bedroom that’s minimalistic in concept and relaxing in vibes with its calming colors, a bed comprised of wood and fabric, glamorous light fixture that adds a bit of sparkle to the neutral palette, and grand balcony that offers spectacular views.

A Timeless Gilded Age Mansion in Park Slope, Brooklyn | Open House TV

A Timeless Gilded Age Mansion in Park Slope, Brooklyn | Open House TV

Welcome to the epitome of opulence and grandeur in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Jason Saft, a professional stager, takes #OpenHouseTV on a tour of 18 Prospect Park West: a five-story Gilded Age mansion that’s conveniently located right across from Prospect Park and boasts over 9,000 square feet of exquisite architectural details, historic millwork, and old-world charm — including a limestone facade, stately wrought iron gate, and a Parisian-style canopy fashioned out of bronze and glass.

So what inspired the design of each room in this gorgeous townhouse? Saft says the home’s extraordinary character and original ornate touches — including beautiful ceiling moulding throughout — provided him with room to get creative while honoring the integrity of the space through curved bouclé sofas that mimic the pattern in the ceiling and a verdant rug that plays off the residence’s proximity to the park and the onyx in the fireplace.

Other points of visual interest include the middle parlor that features stunning woodwork (such as carved lions) and sculpted furniture, and serves as the social heart of the home; a majestic oak staircase with hand-carved posts and a magnificent fireplace with a Thomas O’Brien poem inscribed in the mantle to capture that feeling of warmth in a home; a dining room that is adorned with rare light fixtures that function as works of art, curved chairs, a green rug, and an oversized traditional table that’s ideal for entertaining dinner guests; an elegant library pieces from different time periods — including an Eames chaise and Jean Carlo valet chair — as well as a unique light fixture that features a stunning medallion; and a primary suite that features several zones — a sleeping area with a modern king size bed, a sitting area with a mid-century-inspired sofa, a workstation with sculptural chairs by Sarah Sherman Samuel, and a vast dressing room with stained glass windows and intricate closets — that exudes a serene and relaxing atmosphere.

Join Open House host Sara Gore for a tour of four breathtaking homes in New York and California that are filled with modern elegance, curated collections, and bespoke luxury.

First up: Welcome to the epitome of opulence and grandeur in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We then travel to Los Angeles where Martyn Lawrence Bullard, an interior designer who’s worked with celebrities such as Cher and wrote the recently published book ‘Star Style,’ invites into his stunning 1920s villa that was built in the heart of Hollywood and exudes an ambiance of luxury, intrigue, and Mediterranean charm.

Next, interior designer Vanessa DeLeon invites Open House viewers along for a tour of her latest project: a Parisian-inspired apartment on 5th Avenue. This New York City apartment is a complete gut renovation and one of the first things that DeLeon did was to completely open the space to fill it with more natural light and flow. From the new foyer with its textured gold-leafed wallpaper making a design statement as soon as you walk through the door to the show-stopping kitchen with its black-and-gold range, gold double-sided hood, waterfall edge countertops, and fixtures reminiscent of a Parisian bistro, this home is full of charm, style, and unexpected touches.

We wrap up this episode of Open House with a trip to the West Coast to join Alison Palevsky, an interior designer based in Santa Monica, California, for a look around a house in the Pacific Palisades that she and her team designed from the ground up that’s pattern rich and a lovely showcase of both style and function. See how she turned this open floor space into a vibrant home full of natural light and visual interest through a mix of sustainable materials and an aesthetic that combines vintage and contemporary pieces.

Inside the Wales House: A Mid-Century-Modern Renovation | Open House TV

Inside the Wales House: A Mid-Century-Modern Renovation | Open House TV

Architects Colin Flavin and Heather Souza take us inside the Wales House in Lincoln, Massachusetts — a 1958 modernist home that was originally designed by Henry Hoover and Walter Hill and respectfully seeps into the natural topography surrounding it with an entry stairway that floats over existing glacial stone. Tasked with updating this mid-century modern space for a growing family, the Flavin Architects duo focused on opening the interior of the home while incorporating innovative materials that honor the bones of the original architecture. Recent additions from this one-story renovation include a carport building, yoga studio with a wall of glass that opens into a sunlit courtyard, and main living area that embraces their firm’s “natural modernism” design principles: open flow, ample light, and visual connection to the breathtaking landscape.

Other highlights from the restoration project include: implementing tongue-and-groove paneling on the walls and structural wood decking on the ceiling, and replacing the solid plywood with lightweight custom-made steel trust; adding distinctive lighting that links the dining area with its iconic Saarinen table and the refurbished kitchen with its Moooi pendants, white oak hanging cabinet with open shelving, and a hand-glazed ceramic backsplash that adds visual interest and dimensionality; and reimagining the sunken family room with a more contemporary, ethereal look by wrapping the fireplace with large porcelain slabs and sleek starlight cable lights.

Full episode: Classic Meets Modern in These Spectacular Homes | Open House TV

Full episode: Classic Meets Modern in These Spectacular Homes | Open House TV

In this all-new episode of Open House, host Sara Gore leads us through five spectacular properties located in California, New York, and Massachusetts that serve as prime examples of classic style meets contemporary design.

We kick off this episode with Ian Slater, who invites into a stunning duplex penthouse located in the heart of the West Chelsea Gallery District at 455 West 20th St — a condominium built by architect Alan Wanzenberg that’s situated within the grounds of the General Theological Seminary. Occupying 3,800 sq ft, this 4-bedroom residence seamlessly dovetails old-world charm with elegant upgrades and features custom millwork, gorgeous hardwood herringbone flooring, and ample natural light.

Next, architects Colin Flavin and Heather Souza, who take us inside the Wales House in Lincoln, Massachusetts — a 1958 modernist home that was originally designed by Henry Hoover and Walter Hill and respectfully seeps into the natural topography surrounding it with an entry stairway that floats over existing glacial stone. Tasked with updating this mid-century modern space for a growing family, the Flavin Architects duo focused on opening the interior of the home while incorporating innovative materials that honor the bones of the original architecture. Recent additions from this one-story renovation include a car port building, yoga studio with a wall of glass that opens into a sunlit courtyard, and main living area that embraces their firm’s “natural modernism” design principles: open flow, ample light, and visual connection to the breathtaking landscape.

Recent additions from this one-story renovation include a car port building, yoga studio with a wall of glass that opens into a sunlit courtyard, and main living area that embraces their firm’s “natural modernism” design principles: open flow, ample light, and visual connection to the breathtaking landscape.

We then journey to Pasadena, California to join curator Jennifer Trotoux for a tour of the iconic Gamble House: a national landmark in the U.S. and classic example of American Arts & Crafts architecture. Built in 1908 by architects Greene and Greene as a winter escape for David and Mary Gamble, who lived in Cincinnati the rest of the year, this well-preserved masterpiece features many distinctive design elements and handcrafted details, including: beautiful joinery throughout the home; motifs such as the family crest and unique inlays that showcase a variety of special materials; an exterior that shows the Greene and Greene’s interest in implementing Japan’s timber architecture throughout Southern California; and a living room with an inglenook that places emphasis on the hearth, a library table, and a Redwood frieze that incorporates the theme of Japanese art and nature into the home.

Interior design Libby Langdon then invites Open House viewers into one of her recent projects: a bright and airy apartment in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood where she offers us some fun design tips and inspiration, including how to seamlessly incorporate different elements into one cohesive design. The real drama begins when you step off the elevator and into the foyer with its texture linear wallpaper and a circular motif. This curved theme continues in the dining room with barrel-back chairs and key places such as with the hardware on the console, base of the table, and the light crystal chandelier. And while the apartment is predominantly styled in neutral tones, Langdon infused pops of color throughout with large art to help make an impactful style statement.

As for the last stop in this week’s episode? A regal estate in Burbank, California known as “The Burbank Castle.” Scott Rosenthal takes us on a tour of all 5,300 square feet of this stunning property that features unique architectural details such as hand-painted murals and an accordion glass elevator. With its beautiful, distressed beams and completely unobstructed panoramic views of The Valley, this Victorian Tudor-style home is filled with luxurious touches and custom craftsmanship, including a Venetian-painted ceiling in the dining room, stained glass windows in the bedroom that usher in an abundance of natural light, and a one-of-a-kind lion’s den with two vantage points.
