What changes can you make to a classic Fort Greene brownstone, built in the late 1890s, to give it a contemporary spin? Let’s see:
Bring in natural light
Install functional yet aesthetically pleasing storage solutions
Mix in a dash of inspiring architectural flair
At least this is what architects Jason Shannon and Paola Yanez of J_Spy Architecture did when a client approached them with the request to convert this Brooklyn townhouse back into a two-family home and create a new vision for how it could be laid out through a total gut renovation.
Transforming this home has been a labor of love for the creative duo as they figured out fresh ways to harmoniously connect each room. From stripping away layers of paint to restore the exquisite original brick beneath and bringing in skylights to brighten each corner to filling the kitchen (perfectly positioned between the dining and living rooms) with character through custom cabinetry and a dramatic marble backsplash that incorporates the light-and-dark elements of the space to a main living space bathed in a soft romantic glow courtesy of a sculptural light fixture that hangs over the dining table and a cozy fireplace that serves an anchor — along with exposed steel beam for a modern touch and a gallery wall that allows their clients to display their abundance of art — they have successfully create a warm and personalized atmosphere. Additional moments of interest include: a simple and calming primary suite with a dark blue wall, thoughtfully placed bed, and bathroom with dark tiles and white fixtures; a home office that repurposes the wood boards from the existing house through the installation of a barn door; and a third floor featuring the kids’ bedrooms and playroom.
