Get ready to step into an eclectic house of oddities and curiosities. Artist and animator Mike Guerena, who’s worked on television series such as ‘Mission Hill’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ invites Open House viewers into his private home in Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California that he shares with his wife and shows us around his rare, unique, and “strange” collectibles. According to Guerena, who is an avid collector of art and memorabilia, guests are usually pretty shocked at all the items he’s amassed over the years, but to him they are treasure finds that have more to do with creativity and personal interests than how much they’re worth. “I just like the way it looks — the beauty of it,” he explains. “I can tell you a story about every little thing on that wall.”
In fact, if you enjoy something more than he does, he’ll allow you to bring it home. And from tiny figurines to life-size ones — and from some interesting finds such a shooter game from the show ‘Bonanza’ and Creepy Crawlers by Mattel to custom creations such as an original painting featuring a monkey posing alongside a duckling and a fortune teller booth that currently sits in his carnival-themed shed, it’s clear that Guerena enjoys collecting these gems — as well as refurbishing old toys — and preserving them for future generations. Overall, this one-of-a-kind abode teems with personality, moments of wonder (and yes, a touch of creepiness as he jokingly points out), and sources of inspiration.
