Do you enjoy a bit of history with your home tours? Then join Carolyn Krams, a docent at Conference House in Staten Island, as she show us around this national historic landmark.

Built around 1680 by English immigrant Captain Christopher Billopp as a way of securing the area around the Raritan Bay, this 2-story fieldstone house served as the meeting site between British Lord Admiral Richard Howe and Founding Fathers Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge when they convened on September 11, 1776 during the American Revolution (hence the name) — months before the Declaration of Independence was signed — to discuss a possible peace settlement. However, their efforts at a treaty proved unsuccessful and the war continued. That said, the museum is a must-visit for history buffs! Surrounded by the lush natural landscape of New York State and comprised of handmade bricks, it also features a few antiques, including a Bible Box for storing important documents, a Grandfather’s Clock from 1740, original floors and ceiling beams, and other period pieces that depict how people lived in colonial times.
