Should asylum seekers be allowed to work to relieve financial burden?

Academicians urging the government to allow asylum seekers to work to ease pressure on local authorities,

Currently, a big number of local authorities are struggling to help asylum seekers due to largely shortage of funding and an unrealistic situation where the applicants are not allowed to work whilst applications are being progressed.

This situation can be improved by making a small change in the current system where an applicant could be allowed to work with the condition to transfer the wages to the local designated authority until the decision has been made.

This change would remove the heavy pressure from the taxpayer’s shoulder and the money currently being spent in millions on looking after thousands of applicants could be better spent elsewhere i.e. healthcare, policing, childcare etc.
