Architect Leah Solk invites Open House into a recently completed project: a brownstone in Greenwich Village. One of her goals in renovating this historic New York City apartment (originally constructed in 1839) was to revitalize it, open it up so that you could see through it from front to back, and fill it with warmth and character — all while maintaining its architectural integrity — which results in a beautiful fusion of modernism and Greek revival elements. From the multipurpose vestibule with its whimsical ‘Alice in Wonderland’-themed wallpaper to the communal living/dining room with a wood-burning fireplace and large windows that flood the area with natural light, this floor-through home offers visual flourishes along with versatile functionality.
Other points of interest include: the private office that was a design collaboration with her client and serves as a guest room when not in use for work; a large window with shutters that separates the living room and office that features scones made of handblown glass on both sides; a kitchen with an exposed brick wall and backsplash comprised of a brick tile for a sense of flow and continuity, as well as a a cozy corner with a banquette with two different directions to it (one for eating and one by the fireplace for conversation); a “hidden” bathroom tucked inside a newly constructed hallway behind a custom glass and steel enclosure; and a bedroom suite that honors the original space with its layout and historical materials, and features a closet that connects to the primary bathroom.
